One of the ten directional temples Pura Goa Lawah was built to honour the god Maheswara. It has been worshipped since around 1000 AD.The cave in the cliff are crammed with bats which are protected, there are thousands of them hanging upside down at the cave entrance.
An old Balinese legend says that a huge snake Naga Basuki is the caretaker of the Earth’s equilibrium lives in the cave.
Kerta Gosa (also known as Taman Gili or Island Garden) situated in Semarapura.
In the days of the old kingdom of Klungkung, the Dewa Agung dynasty moved here around 1710 and built a palace, a moat, courtyards and established a supreme court the “Hall of Justice” where disputes and cases were heard and judged.
Sadly most of the original palace and grounds were destroyed by the Dutch in 1908 and all that remains is the gate, the gardens and two pavilion left. The open sided pavilion is similar to the Sistine Chapel where complex ideas presented on fate and the role of divine rulings in human affairs.
In four rows of Klungkung style painting tell stories tales from travel in afterlife to punishments for evildoers in hell.
The Bale Kambang ‘s ceiling was painted by Wayan Kayvan in 1942 and depicts episodes from the story of king Sutasoma, a folk tale of Pan Brayutand their 18 children and the adventures of the hero Sutasona.
In the middle of emerald green ricefields, close to Amplapura, the Tirta Gangga Water Garden is an attractive maze of pools, fountains, stone carvings built by the last Raja of Karangasem in 1946. Destroyed by the eruption of Mount Agung in 1963 but restored and re-built it is a great place to unwind and feel the old Balinese royal atmosphere.
The name Tirta Gangga literally means the water from the Ganges (the holy river in India), the water from here was always been regarded as holy and it is still used for ceremonies. The spring water also diverted to a swimming pool where you can swim and get refreshed after the long journey.
Built by the great Raja in 1919, the Ujung Water Palace is an other unique place. Used for entertaining royal guests, now it is opened to the public. From it’s highest point where the “warak” is, you can see the blue sea and the mighty Mt Agung with lush forests and green rice-terraces
Tenganan is home to the original Bali Aga people where you can still find the original layout and social organization of a typical village, written in the holy book known as the Usana Bali ( the chronicle of Bali).
Also the very special double ikat cloths called the gringsing- a highly prized masterwork in the traditional textile art world- produced here.
Interesting East is an easy walking tour, not much steps involved. Recommended to any age group.
