The Puputan Square

In 1906 the Dutch army marched to the Royal palace in Badung regency (Denpasar) planning to overtake the Kindom. As they reached the palace, the Raja

( king) emerged together with all his court, priests, wives, children and servants.

All dressed in

ceremonial garments with beautiful jewellery and they carried the traditional kris (dagger). As the solders came closer they committed suicide with their kris rather than surrender....

2 years later another Puputan took place in the Klungkung regency....

This place and a monument is dedicated to the memory of the Puputans ( the other monument is located in Klungkung). The Square is visited by many local people every afternoon for recreation

and every year there is a commemoration.
